This book couldn't have come at a better time. I picked it up because I had just started living on my own and realised that I have been spending too much on expensive take-aways. This book has served as a good introduction to cooking and the kitchen. While I'm not quite a home cook yet, I'm certainly more confident in serving up palatable dishes. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the basics and increase in their knowledge around the kitchen.

A practical guide of 'How-To's in the kitchen I never knew I needed. This book is funny, useful, and told with genuine care. Definitely worth checking out!

I wish I had read this before coming over to Australia for my tertiary studies eons ago, it would have made my life a lot easier, reduced the misadventures in the kitchen & not having to survive only on instant noodles the first few months. I love the way the book is structured, the humour in the common sense approach & the recommendations given in layman’s language. Perfect for newbies in the kitchen especially those who can’t boil water for a cup of tea without burning it.

This book feels like a big sister trying to teach me how to be an adult. Could have saved me so much trouble when I was first starting out. Heck, still useful for any adult now as well.

This is a funny, practical, and confidence-boosting guide for anyone learning to cook as an adult! Laryssa Lee explains kitchen basics, food safety, simple recipes, and real-life cooking skills with clarity and humour. It’s absolutely perfect for complete beginners who want cooking to feel less intimidating and more achievable!
The book’s explanations of cooking terms, heat control, fridge/freezer tips, and staple-based meals are especially helpful. It’s not about becoming a chef—it’s about feeding yourself well without stress.
I can’t wait to read this further and try the recipes with my teenage daughter as she prepares for adulthood. It’s exactly the kind of gentle, encouraging cooking guide every newbie should have. Highly recommended!
